Hiphop - May 2006

I love videos. It just adds another dimension to blogs. So my second video for today is the clip of the bboy crew WickidForce from Melbourne, battling Rove & Pete while promoting the Battle State Dance Contest (more about in my Dancing blog). It's quite hilarious, and you know that Arch and A1were teaching the other two moves beforehand, so good on Rove and Pete for learning toprock and freezes and even some footwork.

It's awesome that the National Careers and Employment Expo is incorporating Hiphop into it with these battles, as well as a dance competition that isn't just restricted to Hiphop/funk styles, so props to WickidForce for getting in there and to everyone else - come and support it!!! It's a FREE event.

Sorry this news is a bit delayed, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide have already finshed so here are the rest of the dates:

Krayzi'Wun - Wundai
I like to support local talent as much as I can, those who do their thing underground, making their own beats and spitting their own rhymes and not pay some old guy to think for them.

So I present, Krayzi'wun (from the Break Off Crew), based in Blacktown and showcasing his talent in "Wundai", his first mixtape with inspired backings and clever lyrics that see things in everyday life that many seem to overlook.

He been bugging me for a while to hit up his album - sorry it took a while Krayzi but I got to it now. See ya Thursday

Download his mixtape here Krayzi'wun - Wundai
Or get a preview on his MySpace.

"Almost Perfect"

- Krayzi'Wun

...She never settles for less, with no lack of patience
No wonder why they call her Miss Captivatin’
Knows the clocks ticking, so she makes no collision
Takes upon any challenge, her talents are godgiven
She’s non-choosy, never doing a wrong duty
And what’s within her pupils is beyond beauty

She's a second from perfection..but i aint gonna try
maybe tomorrow..not today..that's my only sacrifice
I'd be...quite a rich man..if feelings were funds..
Everybody's got a chance...and mine's a million to one

If Hiphop were a baby, Grandmaster Flash would be its daddy. Sometimes referred to as "The First DJ to make the Turntable a Musical Instrument", he is one of the pioneers of Hiphop as a musical genre. With his innovative turntabling skills he created mixing (creating certain transitions between records to keep a continuous flow of music) and cutting (using duplicates of records to create breakbeats) which laid the foundation for scratching.

Possibly his most (and rap's most) famous track, "The Message" is groundbreaking in its lyrics which was one of the very first to discuss 'the struggle' of living and surviving the 'ghetto':

"You'll grow in the ghetto livin' second-rate
And your eyes will sing a song called deep hate
The places you play and where you stay
Looks like one great big alleyway
You'll admire all the number-book takers
Thugs, pimps and pushers and the big money-makers
Drivin' big cars, spendin' twenties and tens
And you'll wanna grow up to be just like them, huh
Smugglers, scramblers, burglars, gamblers
Pickpocket peddlers, even panhandlers...

Don't push me 'cuz I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to lose my head

It's like a jungle sometimes
It makes me wonder how I keep from goin' under..."

Chris Brown
When I first heard Chris Brown's "Run It" about a year ago, I loved it. It was one of those damn catchy songs you couldn't stop dancing to but you knew eventually it would get commercially raped until the teenyboppers and middle-aged women became its biggest fans over a year after it was released.

They refer to him as the next Usher, this kid who recorded THAT hit single when he was 15 y/o (in the song he says he's 16, you know how kids are) and hit a second homerun with "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)". Ok so I quite like the second single too, and have a few more months before it's taken off my playlist.

It's really interesting that Chris' only public appearance in Australia has been scheduled for Westpoint, Blacktown (Sydney), after appearing on Rove Live in Melbourne last night, Sunrise, TRL, 2Day FM, 96.1 and numerous other gigs.
Out of all random places, Blacktown. Not too surprising, because I bet that the highest album sales came from this area, otherwise I'm just spreading a rumour; well management has been too busy to talk to me lately so I guess I'm gonna have to fill in the gaps myself.

I'm also anticipating a certain dance school to bring out some of Chris' back up dancers to do a workshop, as they usually do when celebs swing by our way; I was asked to organise something myself directly with his management but meh. Can't be bothered.

BUT for those who wanna stalk him in Sydney, here's some help:

Now there was also supposed to be a concert on May 28 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre but, as most international Hiphop/R&B acts, it's not gonna happen. This is why I don't ever buy tickets to any shows because there's only a 20% chance it'll go ahead. Besides, it's not like they could've sold a "Chris Brown After Party" which are always held at over-18s nightclubs.

I love technology. In fact, I'm a technology whore. Once in a while I do things the old school way like use a pen and paper or a floppy disk *gasp* - just kidding!

Ion Audio
, a highly innovative company has created some awesome high-tech stuff for DJs and DJ-wannabes where you can use CDs, iPods and MP3 players instead of turntables and vinyl.

http://ion-audio.com/
World's first iPod DJ mixing console

Now this is pretty cool. You can plug in 2 iPods/iPod minis, with two additional inputs for turntables or MP3/CD players and connect it to your PC using USB2.0 or Firewire. What blows my mind is this: "Use with iPod photo to create video mixing through the S-Video Output."

Video mixing? Awesome. I know a certain someone who thought they had the original idea of mixing videos, but found out it had already been done. I don't think I've seen a mixed videoclip yet...
http://ion-audio.com/products/turntables/iTTUSB.html
Convert your vinyls to MP3
Apart from the other high-tech equipment they produce, the more noticeable ones are the portable CD-DJ mixers (the 21st Century boombox), battery-powered turntables, and a vinyl-to-CD/MP3 turntable converter.

Where to find these? As far as I know it's available in the US at Wal-Marts, Target and online.

Well it's about time.

I first heard of the infamous Troi Torain aka DJ Star formerly of the Clear Channel Radio's Power 105.1 FM, a NY radio station, when he poked fun at the death of young R&B star Aaliyah by playing crashing sounds followed by a woman's screams back when he was working at Hot 97.

Now I'm a huge fan of Aaliyah's and was shocked by her sudden passing, then this guy makes fun of the accident while hundreds of thousands of family, friends and fans were in mourning.

So last week he got arrested a few days after he got fired from the radio station for his racist comments about DJ Envy's half-Asian wife and threats to pee in their daugther's mouth along with other forms of sexual abuse. He offered listeners USD$500 for tips on the whereabouts of the child.

According to DJ Star, there had been ongoing conflicts between him and rival DJ Envy from Hot 97 which pushed him to say such things and apologised for them.

Dude, that ain't even cool. He's always been making brutal comments but then again, it has been rumoured that those who control him encourage these kind of stunts. The things some people do for publicity.

MJ, Guy Holmes & Abdulla Hamad Al-Khalifa (Yahoo)
While looking through some old dance videos for inspiration, I came across Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" MTV Awards performance which is my favourite MJ showcase of all time.
Ahhh the good old days.
Where's MJ now and what's he doing?

He may be insane but he's a genius.

So I did a little searching and discovered that MJ's working on a new album. *gasp* What's really random is that he is living in Bahrain recording an LP set for release in 2007 under his record label Two Seas Records which he runs alongisde Bahrain royal family member Abdulla Hamad Al-Khalifa.

I'm really interested in what MJ's new sound will be like. It'd be such a spin out if he incorporates some Middle Eastern flava, dirty south crunk and get this - he's collaborating with none other than 50 cent and the rest of the G-Unit clan. Teddy Riley is set to produce some tracks, just like the good old days so it seems like it'll be in good hands...
Yahoo.com
Pharrell... mmmmm

I'd like to see him do a lil somethin' with Miss Alicia Keys, maybe Gwen Stefani and definitely another track with his sister Janet. Maybe a track with Black Eyed Peas and some Pharrell - because he's so damn sexy and he can sell anything.

R.I.P. Skeeter Rabbit (http://www.electricboogaloos.com/)

It was only last night that I glimpsed at the new bulletins on myspace.com when I saw a message from the Groovaloos saying R.I.P Skeeter Rabbit - I don't know the how, when and where yet... I mention his name to many people, none have ever heard of him, one of the pioneers of the old school funk styles of dance - popping, locking and electric boogaloo.

R.I.P Skeeter Rabbit. Keep dancing wherever you are.

It was only a few days ago that I wrote about newcomer Ne-Yo; well he isn't all new to the industry, just new to the public. His songs are highly infectious (c'mon admit it - you kinda like one of his songs) and here I was browsing through Ticketek.com.au to see what I can spend my money on and I came across THIS.
Ne-Yo
Ne-Yo to perform in Sydney

Well it seems like someone's bringing Ne-Yo down to Sydney for a one-off show at Gas nightclub at the end of May. The page says nothing about who but covers the when, why, where and how much. Tickets are $38.40-$53.40 which are quite random prices. It's an over-18s event though - shame because half his fans are under-age.

I'll keep an eye on this.

It's almost 5.30am on a Friday morning (Sydney time) and here I am blogging.

I came home a few hours ago from the Grandmasters Tour (DJ Muggz & Gza the Genius) at Home nightclub (Sydney). It was the longest concert I had ever been to. Doors opened at 8pm and DJ Def Rok played an awesome set for a few hours until Infallible came on.

You know at concerts when people in the standing area usually sprint to and fight over front row? Well here people started filling up the back and sides first before getting to the front. Yes, that was random.

DJ Solo (Soul Assassins) came on and ripped the place up - he was up there hyping the crowd and playing a varied and tasteful selection of classic Hiphop tracks.

To my delight, he stopped spinning, yelled at the audience that he was gonna make a Hiphop beat out of, get this - three Australian pop songs: "I'm talking about the shitty Australian pop too!" he told us.

FIrst track was Ben Lee which Solo mocked by dancing like a Teletubby; second was "ya homegirls" The Veronicas and third was Deltra Goodrem's 'Born To Try'.

When he introduced each track, some audience members got offended (and some just too stoned to care). So he changed tempo, flipped the beat of the first two and added the chipmunk version of Delta.

I'm sitting there (yes, sitting) thinking, why aren't our club DJs like him? His choice of music, the way he interacts with the crowd and showcases - that's the kinda people we need running the joint at the Sydney Hiphop club events.

At about 12.30am, DJ Muggz (Cypress Hill) comes on and lays some good ol' stuff. I'm tired as hell at this stage which was 5 hours after I arrived at the joint. Speaking of which, I was breathing in a lot of second-hand weed smoke but at least all the acts were pretty dope; GZA and Killah Priest (with a towel around his face) came out at about 1am and did their thang.

Too tired to stay at the after party but not to blog about it. What is wrong with me?

Also funnily enough, Solo dropped Ne-Yo's "So Sick", and on the way home it was on the radio. What's with that...

Who is... Ne-Yo?

May 11th 2006 02:54
I'm an R&B baby; music that is soulful, sultry, sensual, smooth and sexy… all the things you could want in a person and more.

Sure you get the occasional annoyingly over-emotional sob story but who can resist the sweet-as-honey, angelic voice of Aaliyah or the soothing mocha-flavoured tones of Brian McKnight? What about the powerful affirmations of Whitney, the breathy whispers of Mariah or the husky murmurs of Alicia Keys?

Newcomer Ne-Yo will be the first to be featured in the “Who is…” series that will highlight the relatively new, or unknown artists/songwriters/producers in Hiphop.

Ne-Yo
Ne-Yo: Songwriter Extraordinare

Ne-Yo:

- His real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith, but “Ne-Yo” is a Hiphop crossed Matrix inspired nickname.
- He is part African American, Puerto Rican and Chinese
- He co-wrote Mario’s “Let Me Love You” along with writing for Jamie Foxx, Mary J Blige and B2K to name a few

Check:
Ne-Yo

- His debut album “In My Own Words” and a cameo on “Steppin’ Up: Save the Last Dance 2”.

- One of his newest releases “So Sick” has a female reply (actually 2 unofficial versions floating around but one is much better than the other)

- His latest single “When You’re Mad” has had mixed reactions: he tells of how he (and most men I know) loves a feisty woman and thinks it’s adorable when they throw tantrums and scrunch their noses in frustration. Hmph! Women are people too! *stomps foot on the ground* “Awww, isn’t that cute.”

I'm really feelin’ Ne-Yo right now, with his poignant ballads and contagious melodies; so much so that my crew HAD to dance to “So Sick” – yes, you can dance to R&B and no, it’s not too slow. Those who are interested can view the video here

Bill & Jay kick it

Bill Gates recruits Jay-Z, president and CEO of Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam records (who represent big name acts such as Kanye West, Rihanna, Fabolous, The Roots, Ludacris and newcomer Ne-Yo just to name a few), as the celebrity of choice for Microsoft's seventh annual MSN Strategic Account Summit; the two-day digital advertising conference will discuss the highly anticipated MSN adCenter that will serve as a rival to Google’s AdSense.

Microsoft states that Jay-Z’s role at the summit is to “share his experiences and perspectives on how to stay relevant amid constant changes in the music industry, and relate those lessons to the world of online advertising.”

Wow. If anyone in the Hiphop game is to school Microsoft, he’s probably their best bet – his lyrical skills and business smarts brought the street hustler in rags to a high-powered industry executive. I guess Gates didn’t dig the whole “get rich or die trying” philosophy.

On the Roc-A-Fella records site, Jay Z shows respect for Gates earlier last month saying “the greatest example of philanthropy I see is Bill Gates. He gives away one billion dollars a year.” Well I would too if I was worth $50 billion. Last week the business tycoon said he didn’t like the attention associated with his wealth and wished he wasn’t so rich. Me neither, Bill.

The man whose time is not worth bending over to pick up a $1000 bill has been the – butt – of many jokes. This fake article in particular is highly amusing and inspires this picture;
Willy-I-Am
Willy-I-Am
Bill Gates takes on the pseudonym “Willy-I-Am” for more street cred and the article gives examples of hypothetical album, song titles and lyrics:

‘On one moving track entitled "Cracked music," Willy-I-am despairingly emotes about the time his "momma" bought him an iPod that did not work with his Windows media format tunes.’

It seems like the ‘hood is getting on the right side of the heavenly Gates, and Bill will join the ‘hood at this heavenly rate, to seal the ‘hood’s fate, all love no hate, as Master P states:

"And push 600 wit a bulletproof
The ghetto Bill Gates
The only president wit a gold tooth"
- (Master P – Get Ya Paper)

What a crazy weekend. Not mine though – I was forced to recover at home with a terrible cold while others endured the terrible cold for the Elements tour and/or Jin. Sunday I managed to check out the bboys and bgirls at Raw Street Session at Hyde Park. Good turn out, they kept goin' till late at night.

Raw Street Session: Chapter 1
Bboy jamming at Hyde Park

Jin was pretty popular with people lining up from 8.30pm onwards for a couple of hours before they got in, even while Jin performed. He did a couple of tracks from his first two albums and freestyled with DJ Rectangle on the decks – OH SNAP! I didn’t even know he was gonna be there, I'm a fan of his Hiphop mixes – check some samples from his MYSPACE www.djrectangle.com. “And I'm so sick of [wack] songs, so tired of [the radio]”

The one-time US DMC champ spins for big names like Eminem, Xzibit and Warren G and gives props to DJ Q-bert (four-time DMC champ, one-time DMC judge and DMC Hall of Famer) who happened to be down the road and around the corner spinning to the Supernatural flow at the Metro.

One of my friends who was breaking at the pre-show said MC Supernatural was “crazy dope” and to check out who is considered to be one of the best freestyle MC in the world, his video HERE where he picks on the G-Unit and states “ima let ‘em know that rap, is a contact sport”.

What I would’ve done to see battles: DJ Rectangle Vs. DJ Q-bert, Jin the Emcee Vs. MC Supernatural.

They were all here at the same time, too bad no one did anything about it! Oh if only I had the skills, knowledge, contacts and finances…

UPDATE: Thanks to Cbay for pointing me in this direction - the VIDEO of Q-bert and Supernatural at the Metro, Sydney last Saturday night.

Jennifer Beals
Flashdance: Jennifer Beals
I rarely watch TV. Tonight however, since I’ve decided to have a quiet night in, my television set stays on the whole time to my left and the usual assortment of chocolate and lollies to my right. The image on the television screen that catches my eye is all too familiar – black cotton on the tanned, toned physique of Jennifer Beals (who I still follow regularly on “The L Word”).

Isn’t this a blog about Hiphop? Yes, yes I’m getting to that.

Well all of a sudden I got a “Flash-back” to Year 12, my 4unit English cd-rom based project that explored appropriated texts and popular culture, comparing and analyzing concepts taken from original texts used completely or partially in visual, modernized versions.

One example was that of Jennifer Lopez’s homage to the cult film “Flashdance”. Luckily I still have the CD so I can upload certain clips easily just for the purpose of this post.

It was this scene that was the first time breaking was shown in the mainstream – breakdancing was the umbrella term used to describe the different styles of Hiphop/funk dance styles; breaking/bboying/bgirling is the term to describe not only a dance style, but a way of life.

Lilou
Lilou Skools the Sydney breakers

Frosty Freeze moonwalks and Crazy Legs (head of the Rock Steady Crew) does his signature back spin a few times in the film, even doubling for Beals in the end audition scene. From Legs’ backspin evolved the windmill, and Freeze introduces continuous headspins; this was the beginning of what’s known as ‘power moves’ in breaking.

So this Sunday the Sydney bboys and bgirls will be taking it back to the streets as I mentioned previously in THIS post and I encourage anyone in the city to check it out from 3pm onwards at Hyde Park.

In other breaking news (hehehe) Lilou (Pokemon Crew, France) will be holding an exclusive one-off workshop here in Sydney. Most of you would have no idea who I’m talking about. Let video explain it all.

I’ve been highly distracted while writing this post – I started the same time “Flashdance” did on TV, and now it’s halfway into “Footloose” (Channel 7). Ahhh the 80s. Beat Street, Breakin', Breakin' 2 Electric Boogaloo, Fame, Dirty Dancing, Moonwalker...

Man, I feel like dancing.

Sippin' on Jin and juice

May 4th 2006 03:16
In honour of my previous post and Cibby’s enthusiastic elaboration on the underrated Jin the Emcee, I realised Jin’s Freestyle Friday battles were from about 5 years ago, back when I was still in highschool.

I would say the scene hasn’t changed so much and Jin is still constantly faced with cheap racist slurs, but when it comes to battles it’s only natural for each competitor to use what they can against their opponent – sure, there are limits and places you just shouldn’t go, but where do you draw the line?

This comes from reading an interview that DJ Ace, the owner of Pimpfactory.com did with Jin just recently, referring to Jin winning 50k in the notorious annual Fight Klub battle at last year's Mixshow Power Summit in the Bahamas, an international MC freestyle battle that includes many well-known and underground emcees.

A few months prior to his win over Professor Green of the UK, at another branch of the Fight Klub competition, Jin lost out to Serius Jones, with lines like
“You’ve been wack your whole career,
ain’t there two billion people in China,
you can’t even go platinum over there”
and
"You ain’t a Ruff Ryder,
you on the back like one of them broads;
DMX tried to kill him for trying to cook one of his dogs."

Serius was accused of having pre-written sets and he acknowledges that “this isn’t about an original freestyle, this is about $10,000.”

Regardless, shit happens. Jin took out the overall competition and put 10k on the table for an on-the-spot re-match with Serius, who didn’t turn up.

Now Jin’s hosting his own MC battles, over the internet – yes, as he calls it, “The First Webcam Battle” on spitcam.livedigital.com. His MySpace is updated with lots of info about the artist, as well as some tracks and videos, and you can also find him at his Live Digital page where he occasionally blogs.

Check out his track “F*ck Jay Z” – no, he ain’t dissing one of his favourite rappers, but the whole song mocks the stereotyping of Hiphop mostly with creating controversy, and the superficial interest of the media and general public. Jay Z was asked what he thought of this song to which he stated “it’s clever”.

Jin: The Asian Eminem?

May 1st 2006 16:20
I don't usually do comparisons of artists or label them as a version of another artist, especially those I have utmost respect for so as to acknowledge their individuality and talent. The only reason why I titled this post as such: Jin and Em are both highly talented MCs with amazing freestyle skills and when I first heard Jin spit, he sounded just like Em, except for when he started rapping in Chinese. Dope.

I first heard about Jin years ago when he appeared on 106&Park's Freestyle Friday. His freestyle was killin' and his flow was tight -->

Check out some of the highlights:

Week 2
(Dude)
Aye yo I'm mad, for you acting like I ain't the one,
Why you got me battlin', Bruce Lee's grandson?
I'm the star, he just a rookie,
Leave rap and keep making fortune cookies
... dawg I know why ya eyes is chinky,
it's cuz you keep staring at my pinky
(actually his whole set is pretty dope but Jin axes him)

(Jin)
Yo you wanna say I'm Chinese, sonny here's a reminder,
Check ya Timbs, they prolly say "Made in China"
... this is 106&Park, I'm a hard act to follow,
You an amateur, you go to the Apollo...

Week 4

(Dude)
...I'm like a tampon, something that ya girl
needs up in there at least once a month
watch ya girl!

(Jin)
Yo, I get girls, who you tryna diss man?
He masturbate so much he had to rock a wristband
... you ain't a hustla, ya man's copying the works,
He be at the club like Tweet, dropping his skirt
Oops!
(Notice Tweet is one of the judges and he refers to her song "Oops, Oh My")

Week 7

(Jin)
... don't make me start rapping in Chinese on the microphone
"le fana (something in Chinese)"
- that means take ya sorry butt home...

He scored a deal with Ruff Ryders but later left to do his own thing; he claimed they were trying to mould him and used and abused his Asian heritage.
Jin
Jin comes down to Sydney

So now Jin comes down to Sydney, doing a small-scale performance at Bamboo @ Martin Place Bar this coming Saturday night. I expected him to do a bigger thing out here, but I guess he's still pretty unknown except in the underground Hiphop community and in the Asian-Australian scene.

I wasn't all too thrilled with his first album "The Rest is History" released under RR, and neither was he - so he up and left and under an indie label, produced "The Emcee's Propaganda" and won me back. This year check out his mixtapes "A Bunch of Songs and Some Freestyles" and "Mass Appeal 2", along with his third album "FYI".

Now there's a whole heap of issues I can address in regards to Jin being an Asian rapper in the mainstream and the problems
he's had to deal with because of his background.
Screw that. Hiphop is universal; stop all the hating.
