Hiphop - March 2008

"Cappucino" by The Knux

March 27th 2008 03:19
The Knux
Two brothers from New Orleans, producing their own tracks - that's The Knux, a hiphop duo that's been compared to De La Soul.

Their first music video is "Cappucino", and the reviews have been favourable, except for some bloggers who criticize the lyrical content.

The brothers had a bit of misfortune when Katrina hit:

"Just as their recording came to a standstill the Knux were met with great misfortune: Hurricane Katrina. “We never evacuated when the hurricanes hit,” says Krispy, “But for whatever reason when Katrina hit we left with our mom to go to Dallas for the weekend. When we were driving back to New Orleans on the Monday all the cars were going the other direction. The radio wasn’t working, so we had no idea about the flood ‘til someone flagged us down and told us that we weren’t gonna’ be allowed into the city.” After a week of the entire family sleeping in their car, they relocated to Houston and found an apartment. “Man, we lost everything, our whole apartment building burned to the ground, says Krispy. “So we were grateful that everyone was okay, but we weren’t happy to be in Houston.”"

Mr. Earl Simmons, better known as DMX, probably got a lot less flack for being called Earl when he changed his name.

And it's pretty easy to understand that he's probably not sticking his nose in the papers and the New York Times, preferring to kick it in his hometown of Baltimore with some crab cakes. I had crab cakes in Baltimore that were so crab-packed that they could barely stay together.

So it's not a long stretch to imagine that DMX isn't up-to-date on the Democratic nomination battles, but this interview is just ridiculous. In fact, I'm pretty sure this is all made up... found on TSOYA:

" Are you following the presidential race?
Not at all.

You’re not? You know there’s a Black guy running, Barack Obama and then there’s Hillary Clinton.
His name is Barack?!

Barack Obama, yeah.
Barack?!

Barack.
What the fuck is a Barack?! Barack Obama. Where he from, Africa?

Yeah, his dad is from Kenya.
Barack Obama?

Yeah.
What the fuck?! That ain’t no fuckin’ name, yo. That ain’t that nigga’s name. You can’t be serious. Barack Obama. Get the fuck outta here.

You’re telling me you haven’t heard about him before.
I ain’t really paying much attention.

I mean, it’s pretty big if a Black…
Wow, Barack! The nigga’s name is Barack. Barack? Nigga named Barack Obama. What the fuck, man?! Is he serious? That ain’t his fuckin’ name. Ima tell this nigga when I see him, “Stop that bullshit. Stop that bullshit” [laughs] “That ain’t your fuckin’ name.” Your momma ain’t name you no damn Barack."

They must be golf buddies or something, and DMX is just playing a big joke. He's never heard of Barack Obama?

Return of the Juice Crew

March 17th 2008 09:48
You've got to be kidding me - the Juice Crew is getting back together? Are they starting up the old beefs too?

Juice Crew reunion poster

That's right... Marley, Big Daddy, Biz and friends are going to rock it on March 21st, otherwise known as Good Friday.

That's the day that Jesus died, only to be resurrected and reform with his old Brooklyn crew, John the Baptist dropping beats while The Carpenter laid rhymes on that noise.

Man, it's almost enough to make me want to take the train to the airport, buy a $2500 ticket, fly for 12 hours to Hawaii, fly 7 hours to Chicago, fly 4 hours to Georgia, get fingerprinted by the TSA...

...aw, forget it. There's no point in getting fingerprinted just to check out the Crew. Besides, I've got a little beef of my own, with aging musicians still trying to pack arenas. Are Juice Crew the hiphop equivalent of The Rolling Stones?

A noticeable loss of Kool G., though... what's with that?

I didn't write this list, but, man, I wish I had thought of it first. Growing up in a predominantly white part of Canada, I got my fair share of 'I hate rap but I LOVE The Humpty Dance!'.

The hilariously funny blog, Stuff White People Like, posted a top ten that has reached massive popularity... these are songs that made it big, and people love to love them, to show that they're 'down' with all kinds of music.

Top Ten Songs that White People Love

(the post is originally from Cats and Beer)

Just because you wanna, here's the Humpty Dance in all its glory:

In a way, I feel bad.... I love all the songs on this list. Reading around the site, I find that it describes me perfectly, suggesting what we've always known. I'm whiter than all y'all out there.

I'd feel bad, but it's not so bad being an Oreo. You're a tasty treat and go good with milk.

But it's hard not to love Hip Hop Hooray:

Oh, just so everyone can have a laugh, here's the list of Top Ten Rock Songs that Black People Love!
