Cibby threw up a nice post yesterday about a short video I sent him that my boyfriend made with 7 bboys, a bgirl and 2 trickers. I want to give this video as much exposure as I can because I really love it and not because i'm biased either - see for yourself. It sends chills down my spine each time I watch it, the music is fitting and adds to a "film noir"-type mood. It highlights the best that Sydney has to offer both in local artistic and physical talent; the classic backdrop is shown in a beautiful, different light to what you'd normally see during the busy city days and the slovenly nightlife.

For a moment it doesn't feel like Sydney, but an older, distant place in Europe. Far from the usual picturesque postcards of Bondi Beach, koalas or the Sydney Opera House, the dim glow of the view from the street level is reminiscent of the lifestyles of the same street dancers and trickers in the video - our underground community. Some struggle for recognition and respect from the broader community, others becoming nonchalant after trying for so long.

Enjoy, and show some love

On another note, directly after the end scene in this video, a man was hit by a Lexus at the intersection before the traffic lights turned green. He flipped into the air and landed smack on the pavement, blood gushing out of his head. A rush of pedestrians who witnessed the accident ran to his assistance and to the car that hit him, carrying a bunch of guys wanting to show off after seeing all the filming going on. They were screaming at the people in the car, "DON'T MOVE!!! STAY THERE! WE'RE CALLING THE POLICE!!!" I think the guy who got hit survived, although we're not sure. I hope he is ok, and if he finds this post, please email or comment to let us know you're ok.

wayne frosty freeze frost
RIP

It was a sad day for the Hip Hop community last Thursday 3rd April (American time, or Friday, Australia time) when one of the pioneers, Bboy Wayne "Frosty Freeze" Frost died at the age of 44 of an undisclosed illness, diagnosed only during the beginning of this year. Speculations about substance abuse and such were dismissed by relatives and friends after being put on life support just last month.

A member of the Rock Steady Crew since 1981, one of the original bboy crews, he was attributed to inventing a move known as "The Suicide" and featured in films such as "The Freshest Kids", "Flashdance", "Style Wars" and "Wild Style".

I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've done more apologising on my other blog. The highlight of my last few weeks was trekkjing down south and enduring the cold Melbourne weather, fighting off turtle-necked dawdlers on my way to the Melbourne Music Academy to watch my boys SKB win the 2007 Australian Bboy Championships.

Let me tell you something that people, whether they're in the bboy scene in Australia or not, may or may not realise, but these guys have been around as a crew for 8 years or so, without having won a national competition after all those years. Until last weekend.

It's not that they're not good - they're awesome. As a crew they're tight, they're solid, probably moreso than any other in Australia because they've stuck together for so long and are bestfriends above all else. Not to mention their youngest member is only 15 years old. What was so evident with some other crews was that they were more like a bunch of individuals put together to battle. And I think that's what influenced the judges' decision. It was a real anti-climax, when announcing the winners, and if the footage gets bootlegged and posted on Youtube, I'll post it to show you what I mean.

These guys have always been the underdogs. A group of Filipino guys from the outer western suburbs of Sydney who are so laid-back they were never really taken seriously in the scene.

SKB Street Kulture Breakers
SKB (Street Kulture Breakers) from Sydney, Winners of the 2007 Australian Bboy Championships

Anyways, the battles were all hype, it's about time these guys got a trophy and the after party at the hostel where all the Sydney bboys were staying at, was one of the best gatherings I've been to. From playing gladiator handstands to worm races and bboy charades, these guys are damn entertaining. I don't get why their girlfriends get bored hanging out with them...

Here's a summary of the trip in pictures:

Congratulations SKB!

Check these guys out at their official page, www.skb.au.com (no its not a typo!)

Props to the organisers Ray Ray, Lama and Scotty Doo for holding such a dope event.
Also special thanks to Mr Pauler for letting me use his photos.

Mr Pauler
Thanks Mr Pauler!

The only footage up is of the judges' showcase which was DAMN mind-blowing. Flea Rock and Legacy who happened to be Down Under for Gwen Stefani's tour took time out of their busy ass schedules, and almost got fired from the tour to come down and judge the event. Major props to them.

Oh and no battles as of yet, but here's the semi-finals from the NSW eliminator which was said to be the most heated battle:

krs one marley marl hip hop lives review

If you haven't copped this album or heard the track "Hip Hop Lives (I Come Back)" from these two great Hip Hop philosophers, then check it.

"Hip means to know
It's a form of intelligence
To be hip is to be up-date and relevant
Hop is a form of movement
You can't just observe a hop
You got to hop up and do it
Hip and Hop is more than music
Hip is the knowledge
Hop is the movement
Hip and Hop is intelligent movement"

I thought I'd add in Cibby's review of the album:

Hip Hop Lives is the album that fans have been eagerly awaiting for 20 years now… it marks the end of one of the earliest hip hop beefs around, between KRS-One and Marley Marl. Critics were sniffing out the potential of this album back in the day, but, now, in 2007, Marl and The Teacha have finally let old habits die and collaborated.

It’s a response, apparently, to Nas’ album, Hip Hop is Dead, and several tracks on the album suggest that KRS-One wants to push it back to the good spot. The G-Thang Spot, if you will.

But I felt that this album is a more paternalistic record from these two… KRS-One lays it down in ‘I Was There’, essentially pointing out to all the young rappers out there, fronting and perpetrating, that him and Marley Marl were getting it all started, back in the day.

And on that note, it feels a little too preachy at times… KRS never fails to shine on mic, with that deep, monstrous voice, and rhymes that feel so established that it’s like they’ve been extracted from some ancient Nubian texts. While he may have the credentials to lecture us to death, is that what you really want to listen to?

Eh, I can forgive a little bit of angry-father from The Teacha to get a head full of those Marley beats… reminds me of that old Juice Crew stuff, with a darker, more ominous tone. It’s all good, though, and, thankfully, the skits are kept down to an absolute minimum, and are easily skipped on the CD.

It took a long time for the feud to be settled, but KRS and Marl have finally put out this album… years too late, several pounds too far, and at a time when them young kids in the club are going ‘KRS-Who?’… nonetheless, it’s an album that deserves praise for its sheer craftsmanship, like watching a old, gnarled carpenter making a beautiful chair out of maple.

Planet Bboy Review

June 20th 2007 07:34
Planet BBoy Sydney Film Festival
Planet Bboy - inspiring and insightful

Tuesday night, 19th June 2007. George St Cinemas, Sydney.

My b-boyfriend had raved on about this film and watched it a second time with me, spoiling some of the plot and humorous moments. Bastard. He raved about it:

"I was touched... not just by the weirdo sitting behind me, but also the movie. But not as much as the weirdo sitting behind me...

Well the documentary is more so about the Struggle and Glory of a bboy... not so much about the dance moves. "So Moving!!!" was the guy behind me, but also again was the movie... Im so proud to be a bboy."

So it's understandable, when you see a documentary that really speaks out to you, that you can relate to so closely you can claim it's the story of your life (without the subtitles).

This film wasn't made for the bboys, it was targeted at the 'mainstream' audience to give them a better understanding, and hopefully appreciation for this particular element of the Hip Hop culture. The reiteration throughout the movie that Hip Hop is a culture, is a form of expression for anyone who chooses to use this outlet, was refreshening; director Benson Lee's debut documentary explores the bboy way of life, and takes a look at how those close to them react to this unconventional path.

From the ongoing media exploitation of "breakdancing" and the lack of recognition and respect that bboys receive, Lee's honest insight into this generally misconceived world is inspiring, funny at times, and all real.

What makes this Hip Hop documentary unique is its broad, inter-cultural reach, following the journeys of five bboy crews - Knucklehead Zoo (USA), Ichigeki (Japan), Phase T (France), Gamblerz and Last For One (Korea) and their struggle to be the Battle of the Year 2005 Champions. Note: Lee had chosen 4 teams who by chance all made it to the top 4 (there were some obvious choices though).

I absolutely love and appreciate this film, director Benson Lee's intentions, passion and endurance and believe that this film will be one of great significance in the history of Bboying and Hip Hop. Please show your support and sign the petition to bring the film back to Sydney, as currently they don't have distribution rights for the film. If I had money to invest, most of it would go into this film. So come on, sign up to the mailing list/petition HERE.

P.S. To Katsu (Ichigeki), I want to have your baby.

After the first screening at the Sydney Film Festival last Sunday 17th June, the after party - 'Break Out' was held across the road (The Metro) where the local bboys jammed and supporters... well they supported. Here's some footage for those (like myself) who missed out. Oh and mr b-boyfriend is the first and last bboy in this clip. His comments:

There's more footage from the night HERE.

REVIEW (by Drumstick)
She Got Game was the first international Bgirl event to be held in Australia, and attracted the top bgirls from all over the world and the country.

The day started off with a much needed forum with judge Asia One (No Easy Props) who gave a strong and clear message about the direction bboying needs to take in the future. Much was said about the parallels of the skate and surf culture compared with the bboying culture. There are many similarities between the cultures, but ours is self sufficient, but massively under funded. The forum also touched on professionalism as a bboy and a culture, and the struggle of dancers to survive financially.

There was a large space for a decent jam session, and many female MCs entertained the crowd with various numbers. Hip Hop stalls also provided some merchandise at great prices.

The crowd of about 200 were blown away by the world class dancers and their energy and moves. Some of the hard hitters were Bgirl Vendetta (Burn Unit, USA), A-B-Girl (New Jersey) and Jessefecks (Supernaturalz Crew). The preliminaries saw 12 teams of bgirls try to qualify for the top 8 spots and the battle stage. The battles were two rounds each. From the semi-finals onwards, the stronger bgirl of each crew matched up against each other.

Ok so this video has been up for over a year. SO?!?! I'm delayed.

B-Boy Stance: It's Hip Hop - Video

March 30th 2007 02:53
This guy is hilarious. He takes the piss outta the 'bboy stance' which most bboys/bgirls use with as much attitude as they can bring.

This part kills me - "where you hug each other with your arms that are free from your back".

Just watch it if you haven't, and watch it again if you have. Cuz it's Hip Hop.

She Got Game Bgirl Competition Melbourne
She Got Game Bgirl Competition Melbourne

I'm quite excited about this event. Being surrounded by bboys and attending bboy events where you see one or two bgirls competiting (if you're lucky), it's nice to get the female side of the bboy culture and not only are Freestyle Four holding one of the few bgirl events in Australia, they're going hard out.

With international guest judge Asia One (No Easy Props, U.S.A.) and special guest DJ Bles One (Massive Monkees, U.S.A.), with bgirls from all over the US, Australia and New Zealand competing, proves these organisers are serious about making this event one to outshine any other bboy event in Australia.

I hope this inspires more girls to take up breaking and that "She Got Game" will be the first in many more large-scale bgirl events in Australia to come.

SHE GOT GAME

In 2007, Freestyle4 Entertainment will present Australia's First International B-Girl Competition, 'She Got Game'. Female breakdancers (B-Girls) from around the world will congregate at RMIT University's Storey Hall Auditorium in Melbourne's CBD, on Saturday 5 th May 2007, to battle it out for the $5000 prize money and the bragging rights of taking out 'She Got Game'. This all ages event will run from 11:00am – 7.30pm. The day will include 2 on 2 B-Girl battles, DJs, MC & Dance Performances, Fashion Show, Graf Displays, Giveaways, Merchandise Stalls, Youth Hip Hop Forum & more.

Breakdancing is the original Hip Hop dance style and for the first time in Australia it will be brought to centre stage in all its glory by some of world's best B-Girls. Breakdancing is a highly skilled and energy-fuelled dance in which breakers 'battle' to win, judged on their ability to hit the beat of the music, their skills, and perhaps most importantly, their flava and style. This event will bring the International standard of this dance to Australia, with competitors coming from countries including the U.S.A., New Zealand and of course Australia.

The competition features guest judge B-Girl Asia One and DJ BlesOne flying direct from the U.S.A. Asia One being one of the most recognised and respected B-Girls in the world and member of crews No Easy Props, Zulu Kweenz and Essential Rockers, along with guest DJ BlesOne, DJ and member of world renowned breakdancing crew Massive Monkees. The day also features a free one hour Youth Hip Hop Forum from 11am including Asia One. There's no doubt Burn City will be set alight with an action packed day full of gravity defying moves and some of Hip Hop's best at the helm. Don't Miss Out Or It'll Be Game Over!

Awesome 5 year old Bboy (Breakdancer)

November 26th 2006 21:48
This kid is fresh.

He's probably trained hardcore in Shaolin martial arts or for Cirque Du Soleil which would explain those crazy back hand-springs and planches.

Yes, my future babies will learn how to six-step before they learn how to walk

Questions and Answers

Q: How the 1 on 1 Battle's are going to run.
A: We're going to run a seeding system.. Just like tennis. Top 8 Bboys will be seeded based on the number of competition's they've won this year.

There will be another 8 spots open to entrants, who will need to qualify through a wild card round, where the will come out and do 1 set each. Top 8 will go through to the battles.

Final Seeding will be announced on the night.

Q: How can I make sure that I seeded?
A: Send an email to Jeremy@ozbboy.com with your name, the names of all of the competitions that you have won, and any competitions that you can second at during the 2006 year. You will need to label each one clearly. IE: Dancekool Vol 16 - Winner, Battle State Sydney - Runner Up.

Second placings will be used to determine rankings in the event of two or more people having the same number of wins.

Q: Who are the other Judges?
A: The other judges are Bass6 from Hybrid Formz, and Baba from Zealous.

Q: Why those guys?
A: Because the judges live in or around the local area or are from established Sydney crews.

Q: What if the judging is wack?
A: It won't be. Born has the final say in all matters as to who wins a battle.

Q: Are there any discount rates for competitors?
A: NO! The event is $10 for everyone. No Discounts!

Battle State Sydney was held at the National Careers and Employment Expo at the Sydney Convention Centre a few weekends ago, with some great battles and freestyle performances by contestants. Below are videos of some of the break battles and Hiphop solo freestyles, with Hiphop solo winner Nao (Soundbusters, Nu Skool Club) doing his crazy sets as usual, and Fresh Kings taking out the breaking battles. My bad, videos of Hiphop freestyle solos to be up later...

Battle State Sydney Breaking Highlights done by my mister.

Quarter-finals: ScoobyDope/Luke Don Vs Lethal Combination/Watto Davo

Quarter-finals: SKB (Ronnel, Jojo) vs. Fresh Kings

Semi-finals: Scooby Dope (Luke & Don, SKB) vs. CS$ (Red, Hideboo)

Semi-finals: Hybrid Formz (Martin, Taz) vs. Fresh Kings

Bboy scene in Sydney

August 14th 2006 22:47
For anyone interested in break(danc)ing/bboying/bgirling, watch this video. It's a brief introduction to those who don't know anything or know little of this aspect of hiphop. It'll motivate those involved in the scene or just getting started, with advice from some of the top bboys in the country, founder and head of Ozbboy.com Jeremy (Skill@Will, QLD) featuring footage of the craziest 1on1 battle of the year so far, Yowgi (SKill@Will) vs. Leerock (Common Ground, NZ) who are considered to be two of the best if not THE BEST breakers in Australia right now (ok so Leerock's from NZ but he lives here so bleh).

Bboying/Bgirling is lifestyle, not just a dance style.

Best Baby Breakdancer

July 21st 2006 00:01
I looked at the title for the video of "Best Baby Breakdancer in the World" and thought it would be a clip of a kid rolling around on the floor, being cute but nothing spectacular. I was dead wrong. This kid is really awesome, doing cartwheels, drops, rolls and even rocking the beat! He does one-handed and head freezes, and has the beginnings of the windmill and flares, advanced power moves. This kid is so fresh, you know my babies all gonna be like that

Oh and he's SO ADORABLE and EXTERMELY CUTE!

Just a reminder that TONIGHT there'll be a documentary on SBS (Channel 28) at 10pm EST titled "Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme". Kevin Fitzgerald takes a journey into the world of MC freestylists:

"With various scenes shot in LA streets and NYC parks, it exposes the side of hip-hop that is absent from MTV, the side that retains its urgency, spontaneity and grit."

check out the blurb from the SBS website.

Continuing the topic of Hiphop video games, I found another one just now, brought by McDonald's at bboybattle.com. It's a bit slow and so take care if you don't have cable internet, and limited but at least you're amused for about 5 minutes. There's a bgirl in there amongst 4 bboys and you can make them do top-rocks to some footwork and windmills (which gets props in the background by the other breakers and is really cute to watch). Here's the screenshot:

I had quite a few people bugging me about my last post on the Bboy and Graffiti video games - "why aren't there any screen shots or pics up" blah blah so here's some visual stimulation... makes me even more anxious to get the game.

Bboying/Bgirling - a way of life

June 3rd 2006 01:59
Let's set the record straight - breakdancing is the umbrella term the media created to describe the Hiphop/funk styles of dance (and used to be referred to as "rap dancing"). The real term for the style of dance is breaking, and in fact it has become a lifestyle, a sub-culture known as "bboying" or "bgirling".

People who get into breaking quit soon after because they lack the dedication that it takes to train and didn't realise the amount of time and energy that goes into it if you want to be worthy to battle.

In my opinion from observations of the scene, you gotta prove that you can call yourself a bboy/bgirl - I'm tired of people who take a few lessons, or have been doing it for a year or whatever who call themselves a bboy/bgirl but don't "throw down" (do a breaking set) when challenged and are too lazy or have other priorities and don't support the scene. It's wack that people and some so called "bboys" themselves think breaking is all about headspins and flips and what's known as "power moves" (besides the headspins, windmills and such that require a lot of power and rely on momentum) and don't learn foundations (the basic moves to build on) for things like footwork which is just as difficult as the power moves because of the intricate techniques.

Just like with anything in life, especially dancing, it's important to develop your own style or "flava"; this will make you unique and make the moves and sets your own and personalise it like a graffiti artist tags their work.

Another thing that bboys/bgirls (and a lot of Hiphop dancers when they freestyle) seem to lack is the ability to use the music. Once you start getting into the scene, training and battling you'll become familiar with the music, so USE it.

Here are clips from the recent raw street sessions in Sydney called "The Set" which is on every 1st Sunday of the month at a random public place, usually in the city. The second clip, 1.5 has Battle of the Year 2003/BC-One 2005 champion Lilou (Pockemon, France) showing some crazy stuff, although he was holding back because we know he's capable of crazier s***.

The next one is this sunday, 4th June at Martin Place in the city from 2pm onwards; any bboys/bgirls who come down have to battle if challenged or be humiliated in public.

See ya there.

I love videos. It just adds another dimension to blogs. So my second video for today is the clip of the bboy crew WickidForce from Melbourne, battling Rove & Pete while promoting the Battle State Dance Contest (more about in my Dancing blog). It's quite hilarious, and you know that Arch and A1were teaching the other two moves beforehand, so good on Rove and Pete for learning toprock and freezes and even some footwork.

It's awesome that the National Careers and Employment Expo is incorporating Hiphop into it with these battles, as well as a dance competition that isn't just restricted to Hiphop/funk styles, so props to WickidForce for getting in there and to everyone else - come and support it!!! It's a FREE event.

Sorry this news is a bit delayed, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide have already finshed so here are the rest of the dates:

Jennifer Beals
Flashdance: Jennifer Beals
I rarely watch TV. Tonight however, since I’ve decided to have a quiet night in, my television set stays on the whole time to my left and the usual assortment of chocolate and lollies to my right. The image on the television screen that catches my eye is all too familiar – black cotton on the tanned, toned physique of Jennifer Beals (who I still follow regularly on “The L Word”).

Isn’t this a blog about Hiphop? Yes, yes I’m getting to that.

Well all of a sudden I got a “Flash-back” to Year 12, my 4unit English cd-rom based project that explored appropriated texts and popular culture, comparing and analyzing concepts taken from original texts used completely or partially in visual, modernized versions.

One example was that of Jennifer Lopez’s homage to the cult film “Flashdance”. Luckily I still have the CD so I can upload certain clips easily just for the purpose of this post.

It was this scene that was the first time breaking was shown in the mainstream – breakdancing was the umbrella term used to describe the different styles of Hiphop/funk dance styles; breaking/bboying/bgirling is the term to describe not only a dance style, but a way of life.

Lilou
Lilou Skools the Sydney breakers

Frosty Freeze moonwalks and Crazy Legs (head of the Rock Steady Crew) does his signature back spin a few times in the film, even doubling for Beals in the end audition scene. From Legs’ backspin evolved the windmill, and Freeze introduces continuous headspins; this was the beginning of what’s known as ‘power moves’ in breaking.

So this Sunday the Sydney bboys and bgirls will be taking it back to the streets as I mentioned previously in THIS post and I encourage anyone in the city to check it out from 3pm onwards at Hyde Park.

In other breaking news (hehehe) Lilou (Pokemon Crew, France) will be holding an exclusive one-off workshop here in Sydney. Most of you would have no idea who I’m talking about. Let video explain it all.

I’ve been highly distracted while writing this post – I started the same time “Flashdance” did on TV, and now it’s halfway into “Footloose” (Channel 7). Ahhh the 80s. Beat Street, Breakin', Breakin' 2 Electric Boogaloo, Fame, Dirty Dancing, Moonwalker...

Man, I feel like dancing.
