Chris Rock: Love rap music, tired of defending it

July 4th 2006 08:36
Chris Rock is a comic genius. His hilarious take on what I have trouble today with, that is, defending rap music and the Hiphop culture, is quite accurate while being entertaining.

I still get people complaining about the latest Eminem album, Lil' Jon's new video clip and Ludacris' lyrics, and there's some stuff out there I'm not feeling either but it's not because I believe rap is misogynistic, unoriginal and sexually explicit; in fact I don't really notice these traits of commercial Hiphop. Being a dancer, I look for things I can use for musicality, and slams in lyrics are well manifested in a dance battle.

I agree most of the stuff out there has no real deep meaning anymore like the old school rap but I don't think people really take the lyrics seriously anyway - these songs were meant for clubs and parties and such, just to dance, bounce, rock and shake to. We're not trying to look for meaning in these party songs, just entertainment, the way people (not myself) find reality TV entertaining.

Still need convincing? Or even just for a lot of laughs, check out the segment on Rap music by Chris Rock in his "Never Scared" show:

"It's hard to defend 'Move bitch, get out the way'..."

"Women that like rap, don't give a fuck. If the beats alright, she will dance all night."

"Blind the bitch, blind the bitch..."

"If you mention to a woman that a song is disgusting and misogynistic, they'll all tell you the same thing - HE AIN'T TALKING BOUT ME!"

"The Government hates rap... Tupac was gunned down on the Las Vegas strip after a Mike Tyson fight. Now how many witnesses do you need to see some shit before you arrest somebody?"

"You mean to tell me they can find Saddam Hussein in a fucking hole, but they can't find who shot Tupac? They found Saddam in Iraq. Tupac got shot in VEGAS!!! ...in front of CIRCUS CIRCUS!!!"

The whole show is hilarious, here's the segment on Married & Bored or Single & Lonely.

Socio-economic status: White men being wealthy and black men being rich.

"Here's the difference. Shaq is rich, the white man who signs his cheque is wealthy."

"If Bill Gates woke up tomorrow with Oprah's money, he'll jump out a fucking window!"

The War on Terror:
What Bush did to get your mind off the war.

Superbowl mishap:
Janet's 40 year old boob.

Abortion:

Abortion and only 2 things you can say to a woman you got pregnant.

"You ain't gon' find virgins at abortion rallies..."

"I'm alive motherfucker! I should bust a cap in yo ass!"

Women:
It's all about her.

"Fellas, when you wake up in the morning, you should look yourself in the mirror and say FUCK YOU!"

I love hip hop. I just think a lot of people miscontrue a lot of the lyrics in today's rap music, and judge without really examining the deeper meaning, admittedly rap isnt what it used to be during the golden era of Tupac, Biggie and co, but hopefully one day it will return...one can only hope

I agree TonyK, and there's some really awesome artists out there, people just gotta see past all the fiddy BS, and even look at homegrown talent like Hilltop Hoods for example...
