America's Most Wanted Hip Hop Tour
I tried for about 10 minutes to try and get a structured post for this topic, but it's eluding me. I'll just recap from beginning to end.
So I met up with Trina and other people outside the venue, then proceeded to head backstage, where we both got our media passes. I missed a number of the opening shows, and one group, whose name I dont recall, performed a number of songs which I wasnt able to force myself to listen to, even as a reviewer. I picked up the words "drunk sex" from one song, and something about sex in a mcdonalds in the next. Basically not something I enjoyed sitting through.
Cool hand luke delivered, kept me interested and played some good music, so props to him on that. Savage's performance was really what kicked the night off, he got the energy started and performed the songs I expected him to, namely "swing", "not many" and "moonshine". Great job and savage manages to entertain me every time I see him perform.
Imperial Assassins were good. Nothing great, but they bridged the transition to the acts that people REALLY bought tickets for. They did a bunch of their own stuff, as well as playing a Cypress Hill classic, "Insane in the Brain", just to let us know who they're rolling with.
Anyway, while Imperial Assassins had gone offstage, and Cool Hand Luke was back spinning tracks until the next act, Katrina directed me to go backstage and see who I could interview. As soon as I got backstage I saw Kurupt, shook his hand and introduced myself. During our short talk he basically just went over the fact that he loves Australia and enjoys himself whenever he comes down. Kurupt smokes FAR too much weed. That guy is in his late 30's now and he is as skinny as I am. It can't be healthy. Then Wish bone and Krayzie bone came along, who I briefly said "Hi" to.
Emphasis on briefly.
Wish bone looked at me, nodded, then proceeded to pour some alcohol for himself, I said "Hi" to krayzie bone, who looked at me with eyes unfocused and half open, nodded, then joined wish bone with whatever he was drinking. It seemed I wasnt getting any more journalism done at that time, so I left to watch DPG take the stage.
DPG, beginning with RBX, took the stage. RBX has a really gritty flow that is unique in the rap game these days and his rhymes are laced with random military jargon and raw lyricism. Not someone I'd listen to a lot, but he's definitely going on my MP3 player soon. During his set I picked up an Xzibit diss, that didn't escape everyone else either.
"Girls like Xzibiit get f***ed in the mouth
MTV? no, I.C.U., through a sniper scope"
I'll try and get more information on that little jab later.
Roscoe and Kurupt did their thing, and I saw, throught their crowd participation tactics, how East Coast / West Coast beef may have started...
Roscoe: "Now I'm really feeling the left side right here, I want everybody on the left side to turn that way and say F*** THAT SIDE!"
Kurupt: F***. THAT. I want all my people on this side, to stand up and yell right back at them, hey yo F*** THAT SIDE!"
This continued for awhile. Props to kurupt who turned "Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oy Oy Oy" from a weird national pride thing into a crowd participation tactic.
Worst part of the night was when Kate Sera tried to introduce bone thugs, looking like a 50 year old hippy mum trying to be down with the hip hop scene. She ruined my vibe by saying some stupid crap like
"MC's tonight welcome bone thugs by saying Skill recognise skill! Come on, skill recognise skill!"
That and she pranced around the stage like a 16 yr old teen girl who's had one too many cruisers, making attempted gangster faces and poses.
Basically, she made me wish the stage would collapse, if It would stop her from talking.
Finally... Bone Thugs took the stage, and anybody who could see krayzie bone's face could tell that he was thoroughly out of it. They did a great show, and did much more than the 3 songs that the concert promotions said they were going to. I remember them pumping out a Lil' jon track somewhere to hype the crowd up, but they performed a whole bunch of songs, from "1st of the month", "Thuggish Ruggish Bone", "Thug Love" and the track they did with Biggie. There were a lot more but the song names aren't coming back to me anymore.
Overall : Great Concert from Savage onward, had an awesome vibe and energy inside the venue. Apart from all the mindless fans in cripwalk ciphers, throwing up gang signs and people with a very stupid sense of cool, I had a great time.
