Dedicate my life to Hip Hop
February 7th 2007 22:23
There is nothing more I would love to do than to quit my job, drop my academic studies (or just do it by distance and therefore switch universities and my degree) and concentrate on Hip Hop full time.
Sure, I want to take this website to the next level and update it with fresh content daily, twice daily like I used to back when I was being a professional bum for a semester - now that I accidentally scored a job, I've taken the bum out and now I'm just a professional.
Great people, alright pay, excellent career prospects in the finance industry but no Hip Hop. Nothing.
Studying is something I'd want to do all my life but doing a double degree AND an Event Management course by correspondence, I think I'm overdoing it a bit. Just a bit.
Some people would say, just drop everything and chase your dream; live the Hip Hop life and wear the same clothes for 10 years, know more about the scene than you do about what's going on in the rest of the world, immerse yourself in the industry so that all your friends = business partners and you've even got your folks speaking street slang (mine certainly do).
Well, you gotta recognise when it's that time of your life where you're laying the foundations and preparing for the rest of your life - just stick it out and stop complaining like a bitch.

(This is not having a go at Jeremy either ... I don't know him ... ) ... But I'm going to say the exact opposite ...
Pursue your passion and to hell with money ... (where it belongs? ...
Just in case ... When you finally get enough money (which is what amount again? It seems to change each time there is an upwards career move ... or promotion, or salary increase ??? ... One year it is, 'If I get $100K a year, I'll be happy. Once a person gets $100K a year, they meet people on $200K a year, so they reset their goals ... 'Once I earn $200K a year I'll be happy ... etc, etc ... Once I surpass Bill Gates' fortune??? ... (So enough money is never enough? ...
I call it 'Retirement Mentality' ... It's where a person pursues money instead of their passion ... and when they retire? And the Super is available? And the've finally got enough money (and houses and toys?) to pursue a boho lifestlyle in corporate fashion? ... They're too old to purse their passion? ...
I've got a sister. She's going to win the Archibald (but not at the 'expense' of sacrificing her corporate lifestyle ... Hmmm? ...
Perfection in Artistic/Creative endeavours? ... as in, perfecting one's chosen 'profession' in an artistic or creative field (for the not born-into-filthy-rich families)? ... They usually come at a cost ... That cost? Sacrificing 'the pursuit of money' to pursue one's PASSION ...
But as my sister and her corporate friends often used to tell me? ... "What would you know about life? You're not financially independent. You're not a success in life. (where it counts? the business world?).You're a complete loser." ... (Well it's what they used to tell me when they spoke to me and didn't decide to write me off completely and refuse to ever speak to me again, anyway ... (which is a blessing to me ... I don't want people like that in my life ... even blood relations ... Plus, it frees up my time to pursue my boho passion ... in boho style not corporate style ) ...
Me? Anti-Coporate? Not totally. Close to it, but there are good people in the corporate world ...
They're just my thoughts ... You seem more than capable of making your own decisions about life ... and the quality of your blog suggests that you don't lack creativity or intelligence ...
And finally ... Anyone who can influence their parents to speak 'street slang'? ... I'm sure they can influence their own life, and take it in the direction they want to take it ...
David ...

I guess my $0.02 is that I don't believe, in this sort of question, that there's ever a "right" choice -- there are only choices and consequences... Same sort of deal with risk in general; there is no optimum level of risk vs payout, but it's an individually variant thing...

I've just been keeping my options open for as long as i could, but it all wants to become a bigger part of my life that i can't handle it >.<
but,,, sometimes when it gets too crazy, u gotta make sacrifices >.<. whether it's work, family, dance, or your social life.... as long as you don't end up regretting the choice you made, then it's ok
just gotta find the right balance bub! I know this mite sound stupid but i figured i'd rather a $50,000 salary and i get to go out as much as i do now,,, than a $100,000 salary with no social life >.<

I get what you mean trina. and it frustrates the fuck outta me. coz im 17 and i gotta make a choice between focusing on what i like doing, dancing, being creative, all of that shit with no real responsiblities...
or studying, focusing my efforts towards a job, uni and d2mg (not necessarily in that order). not saying that those are bad things, but theyre significantly more tedious than just dancing all day and writing lyrics and learning how to graf and dj.
One of these days its gna be a permanent choice. career or passion.
personally? i dont have any problems being a nurse that doesnt get promoted. i make my money, i leave, i go and be the hip hop head i am.
show em trina
i'm gna write and email you a blog on naughty by nature. just coz i got a bit to say

I write this in the morning thinking about my future and my passions, have a whole day of (Hip Hop) meetings and come home to a bunch of responses from the most active in the Orble and Hip Hop communities.
David: Poor Jeremy IS chasing his passions and dreams but I've been eye-witness to several incidents that have broken his heart and made him so cynical. I love your comment and appreciate it.
Amazingly an opportunity has presented itself a few hours after I wrote this post, and to be offered to get paid for doing what you love is the best feeling in the world... better than sex... unless you love having sex and get paid for it, then that's a triple-whammy (and good for you).
Someone once told me that you will eventually become successful in what you do if you're passionate about it. I started out doing a lot of things for free that I now am or will get paid for. All that hard work is really paying off.
A hug for you David.

I can't advise you on this decision, it's too big... but I can tell you what I did, and I have no regrets that I can think of.
I got all the degrees, courses and learning out of the way and then went boho - or in your case, hip hop. It offers you a choices you will not otherwise have by passing it up too soon.
You have time by the sound of it to get all those lovely bits of paper on the wall, well before it "Passes you by?" Hell, I'm really decrepit in age compared to you and it still hasn't passed me by.. well it's catching up perhaps...*lol* but I'm still a few steps ahead, with a few tricks up my sleeve.
With my study complete behind me I have been able to find ways through the 'other side' that I wouldn't of been able to without the self esteem and confidence the bits of papaer gave me. I suspect you will find things you can do with your degree in the hip hop world too... allow the possibility of magic into your life, don't limit it too much with preconcieved ideas from others with no vision or passion...David is right there, you seen to have something unique here?
Remember: the biggest pre-requisite to success in anything is persistance. Whatever you do, stick to it, especially if it is something you are passionate about. The world is full of educated derelicts and unemployed genius ...
Good Luck with it all,
keep us 'posted,'

Acquiring knowledge = minimising risk. I think? I'm just making stuff up, which most of the time I get right; maybe it's to balance out my lack of direction.

Well not really, but they probably think that for a second or two then move on to more important thoughts like how to score more free drinks.
Well if my kids hate Hip Hop then I'll hate them.
Hahaha naw, I'll edu-ma-cate them the OLD SCHOOL way. Bring back James Brown!

Keep doing what you do too, and hopefully we'll get to a position in the community where we can help each other out (interstate type ish) then we can stress together and cry together when things f*ck up.
Ahhh yes the right balance... I think my diet prefers the urban flava

I thought I could be content with a non-Hip Hop related day job and be Mz Trina by night. But no, I want to invest all my time, my energy, my life into it. Does that sound crazy, especially when there doesn't seem to be a huge demand in this country for it?
Nah screw that. Be a part of the driving force that creates the demand
But at least you can take care of me when I'm sick
I read your last paragraph as "a naughty blog" thinking there was some kinky shit you wanted to post haha!

Love it.
Maybe tricks up the sleeve are what we all need to achieve some success with our un-conservative pursuits.

and it doesnt come down to "get a degree and earn money" vs "hip hop passion" .... i think it purely comes down to the fact that.... you WANT to do your degree and you WANT to study, just like you want to be a major part of the hip hop scene in sydney.
whether we like it or not, the truth is that your degree at uni is going to teach you alot about stuff you will need to learn in order to fulfill your hip hop dreams, and just remember that by studying hard it will only make your life easier in the end and benefit your passion!!
and no need to worry coz hip hop wont go away, whether you need to leave it alone for a year or what... you can always go back, pick up the scraps, make it work coz we all know u've been trying to do that.
my only advise it... dont over do it!!!!!! MY god get a holiday!!! (mmm.. i cant talk...) need some randomness but somehow i dont see that coming :*(
