Ashkon in the Hot Tub

April 8th 2008 09:21
Ashkon Hot Tubbin'

Ashkon is a musician from The Bay that's brought down his latest single, "Hot Tubbin'", on YouTube and Myspace.

It's getting easier and easier to find great acts on the web... blogs and web media is funnelling down into a several good sources with enough reputation to build an audience. Hopefully, the gatekeepers have enough taste and integrity to deliver the really excellent music.

This is not excellent music. This is not a hot track.

What this is, instead, is a satirical R&B song that sounds like it was damn fun to record and film the video!

Welcome to crate digging!

September 29th 2007 12:21
For a long time I've wanted to really explore music and its history; where a song comes from, what sample does it use, what are the old school greats that kids should listen to and pay their respects, and so on. Actually it's one of the reasons I started this Hip Hop blog, and it's taken me a year and a half to finally get something going on besides all the news and rumours that come and go, the tours and competitions and whatever else I post up here.

So let's bring it back to the music.

I'm talking old school and new school, Motown to Dirty South, gangsta rap to funky soul and much more. Let's start digging through those crates...

get served tour dates 2007 australia

OH SNAP! Omarion, Marques and Avant.

I just creamed my pants.

*breathes*

These three sexy R&B crooners will be heading to Australian shores this November. Bring at least 2 spare changes of underwear.

And YOU can win a double pass to see them in concert in Sydney! Enter the competition to win tickets to the Sydney show of the Get Served Tour 2007!

It would be cool to see the other half of Immature come down to have a little reunion performance, then the other half of B2K to do a bigger reunion performance. Oh yeah I know I'm gonna be asked this so I'll answer it now - apparently Omarion and Marques are half brothers.

Get your tickets from Ticketek (Brisbane, Melbourne) or Ticketmaster (Sydney, Auckland).

[EDIT Monday 5th November 2007]

The highly anticipated Get Served Tour scheduled to be held in Australia and New Zealand in early November 2007 has been rescheduled. This action is unavoidable due to a personal matter within the Touring Party.

The affected dates are listed below:

· Wednesday 7th November 2007 – Chandler Theatre, Brisbane
· Thursday 8th November 2007 – Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney
· Friday 9th November 2007 – Vodafone Arena, Melbourne
· Saturday 10th November 2007 – Vector Arena, Auckland

Ticket holders are urged to hold onto their tickets with prime seating positions and availabilities becoming scarce. All existing tickets will remain valid for the new dates. It is anticipated that the remaining tickets will be selling fast with new tour dates coinciding with the school holiday period.
For those who may be inconvenienced by the new date change, a full refund will be obtainable from all ticketing outlets.

The tour dates will be officially announced later this week, with the possibility of a confirmed fourth artist set to appear on the bill in addition to Omarion, Marques Houston and Avant.

The response to the tour has been overwhelming with tickets selling fast for all shows, and the Artists set to provide an exhilarating performance down under. The artists have been long anticipating the tour to Australia and New Zealand, with a full scale dance performance included in their massive 3 hour live show.

The rescheduling of the tour makes for greater anticipation and build up to one of the best Urban Music tours to hit Australian shores in the last few years, and the possible addition of the fourth artist will make for an unforgettable Get Served Tour.

Avant ft. Nicole Scherzinger - Lie About Us

Marques Houston - Naked

Gee I wish I had been sent a copy of this album to review last year. I've only heard two songs off Thicke's current album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke and I'm madly in love with both of them (thanks to Mr George who put me onto 'Superman' and reminded me of 'Lost Without You'). I love his clean, suave look like Pharrell lent him some clothes. A modern day Casanova with a smoother falsetto than Justin Timberlake, Thicke has re-won my heart and libido over. I didn't mind his scraggly look, running around sweaty on his bike in his first clip, his cheeky lyrics and cute smile did it for me.

These tracks are smooth and sweet, great for when you're feeling lovey-dovey or wanting to get in the mood. Put on as make-out background music and start by slow dancing.

Mmm...

robin thicke when i get you alone
Scraggly but still mmm

Lost Without You Lyrics:

I’m lost without u
Can’t help myself
How does it feel
To know that I love u baby

I’m lost without u

How does it feel
To know that I love u baby

Tell me how u love me more
And how u think I’m sexy baby
That u don’t want nobody else
U don’t want this guy u don’t want that guy u wanna
Touch yourself when u see me
Tell me how u love my body
And how I make u feel baby

U wanna roll with me u wanna hold with me
U wanna stay warm and get out of the cold with me
I just love 2 hear u say it
It makes a man feel good baby
Tell me u depend on me

Superman Lyrics:

[Verse 1:]
I'm A Superman Thanks To Lois Lane
Kissed Away My Problems When I Went Insane
Fished Me From The Bottom When I Lost My Name
Gave Me Something I Could Live For (Something I Could Live For)
And Everybody Wonders What's The Change
They Don't Recognize Me Cause I Got So Much To Say
And I Never Thought That Anyone Could Love Someone
So Much That They Give Up On Everything

[Chorus:]
I Will Be There To Take Care Of You
I Will Be There When You Cry Babe
I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Tell You
That You're Beautiful Baby

I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Run With
I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Dance With
I'm Your Lover When The Skies Turn Grey
Everyday Til Its Beautiful Baby

Oh
Til Its Beautiful
Til Its Beau-Ooh Ooh Baby
Til Its Beautiful Baby

[Verse 2:]
I'm A Butterfly When I'm In Your Hands
You Can Turn The Pavement Into White Sand
You Can Make A Moment A Memory In A Glance
And I Cant Believe Anyone Else
And Everybody's Talking
But You Always Keep Shouting
You Never Stop Cursing Yea Babe
And I Never Thought That Anyone Could Love Someone
So Much That They Give Up On Everything

[Chorus:]
I Will Be There To Take Care Of You
I Will Be There When You Cry Babe
I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Tell You
That You're Beautiful Baby

I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Run With
I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Dance With
I'm Your Lover When The Skies Turn Grey
Everyday Til Its Beautiful Baby

I'm Your Superman Baby
Yea
Your Superman Baby
Oooh

Til It's Beautiful
Til It's Beautiful
Til Its Beautiful Baby
Your Superman Babe
Til It's Beautiful
Til Its Beau-Ooh Ooh Baby
Til Its Beautiful Baby

[Verse 3:]
There's A Million People Underneath The Sun
That Can Find A Million More And Never Find The One
There's A Girl Who Did This And A Socialite
Was On Magazines And Was The Shy Type Baby
But I'm A Superman Thanks To Lois Lane
Fished Me From The Bottom When I Lost My Name
And I Never Thought Anyone Could Ever Mean So Much So Much

[Chorus:]
I Will Be There To Take Care Of You
I Will Be There When You Cry Babe
I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Tell You
That You're Beautiful Baby

I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Run With

guru jazzmatazz volume 4 hip hop jazz messenger

Mmm I like this funky, jazzy and soulful Hip Hop.

Reviewed by Cibby:

Guru’s Jazzmatazz brings volume four out to the block, ready to drop the needle on the hip hop-jazz fusion genre. The full title of the album is actually Guru’s Jazzmatazz Volume 4: The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future.

Whew! Long winded, isn’t it? Like his title, Guru’s fourth addition to the Jazzmatazz collection plays out over 16 tracks, featuring guests on nearly every song, leaving your stereo feeling tired and breathless.

I’m weak – I can’t help but like the hip hop jazz thing. It’s easy listening for music reviewers, and the Solar production is soft enough to fly under my easily-irritated radar. The first time through, the CD sounded great, and a glowing review oozed from my fingertips.

I’m listening through it for a fourth time, and it’s beginning to grate on my frazzled nerves a little, especially some of the reggae-flavoured hooks. And while I never get tired of piano tinkles on a loose beat, it sounds reminiscent of something I faintly remembered before. Can I recommend this album? I’m ten seconds away from melting it with my lighter, but, unfortunately, it’s all out of fluid.

Nah, it’s alright…while not as solid as the first or second Jazzmatazz, the fourth album in the series bring more of the same Guru sound, and you’ll definitely appreciate the subtle horn samples coming in overtop. Best played in a convertible on a warm spring morning.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Nas can't forget about you video
Nas
I've been digging this track for a while. From the rich lyrics dripping with hints of Hip Hop history to the catchy soulful chorus sung by Chrisette Michele that samples Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" classic in this Will.I.Am produced track, Nas' "Can't Forget About You" is reminiscent of the good old days and has been promoted to one of my main ringtones.

Peep the vid:

Lyrics:

[Nas- Verse One]

There comes a day in your life
When you want to kick back
Straw hat on the porch
When you old perhaps
Want to gather your thoughts
Have a cold one, Brag
To your grand kids on how life is golden
So I’ma light a cigar in the corridor of the crib
Pictures on the wall of all the things that I did
All the money and fame, 8 by 10’s
Of the whole rap pack inside of a big frame
Colliding with big names that could’ve made you career stop
All that, and your man is still here, and I’m still hot
Wow, I need a moment ya’ll, See I almost felt a tear drop

When was the last time you heard real anthem?
Nas, the millionaire, the mansion
When was the last time you heard your boy Nas rhyme?
Never on schedule, but always on time.

[Chorus- Chrisette Michele]
These streets hold my deepest days
This hood taught me golden ways
Made me (truly this is what made me)
Break me (not a things gonna break me)
These streets hold my deepest days
This hood taught me golden ways
Made me (truly this is what made me)
Break me (not a things gonna break me)
Oh, I’m that history, I’m that block
I’m that lifestyle, I’m that that spot
I’m that kid by the number spot
That’s my past that made me hot
Here’s my lifelong anthem
Can’t forget about you (Can’t forget about you)

[Verse Two]

Can’t forget about the old school
Bam, Cas, Mel lie Mel flash,
Rocks steady spinning on they back
Can’t forget when the first rap Grammy when to Jazzy
Fresh Prince, Fat Boys broke up,
Rap hasnt been the same since
So irregular, how it mess you up when Mr. T became a wrestler
Can’t forget about Jordan’s retirement
The shot Robert Horry hit to win the game in the finals kid
Some things are forever, some things are not
It’s the things we remember that gave the world shock
They stay in a place in your mind so snug
Like who the person was with whom you first made love

When was the last time you heard real anthem?
Nas, the millionaire, the mansion
When was the last time you heard your boy Nas rhyme?
Never on schedule, but always on time.

[Chorus]

These streets hold my deepest days
This hood taught me golden ways
Made me (truly this is what made me)
Break me (not a things gonna break me)
These streets hold my deepest days
This hood taught me golden ways
Made me (truly this is what made me)
Break me (not a things gonna break me)
Oh, I’m that history, I’m that block
I’m that lifestyle, I’m that spot
I’m that kid by the number spot
That’s my past that made me hot
Here’s my lifelong anthem
Can’t forget about you (Can’t forget about you)

[Verse Three]

Unforgettable, UnSubmittable I go by N now, just one syllable
It’s the N cuz' the game tied is the same vibe
Good times had right after James died
That’s why the gangsta rhymers ain’t inspired
Heinous crimes help records sells more than creative lines
And I don’t want to keep bringing up the greater times
But I’m dreamer nostalgic with the state of mind
The past the past, enough of it aight then
Nothing gives me chills like Douglas and Tyson
Or Mike when his talk was live
Or when he first did the moon walk on Motown's 25

When was the last time you heard real anthem?
Nas, the millionaire, the mansion
When was the last time you heard your boy Nas rhyme?
Never on schedule, but always on time.

These streets hold my deepest days
This hood taught me golden ways
Made me (truly this is what made me)
Break me (not a things gonna break me)
These streets hold my deepest days
This hood taught me golden ways
Made me (truly this is what made me)
Break me (not a things gonna break me)

That's why darling it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I'm unforgettable too

bobby brown tour australia sydney melbourne perth
The New Edition rebel formerly known as Mr Whitney Houston is touring Australia in a few weeks time. This guy is so bad, even Osama wanted to put a hit on him - but that's because Osama was deeply infatuated with his ex-wife Houston, as published last September in Harper's Magazine by Kola Boof, one of Osama's former sex-slaves.

He made headlines a few months ago for threatening British TV Host Jamie Campbell after Campbell joked about having gay sex with the artist. Brown was getting fired up:
"You said to me, I haven't even tried any sex moves on you yet. Yet? What the f*** you mean, 'yet'? I'm a grown-ass man. Yet? On live TV I will f*** you up. Trust."

I wonder if Brown will make headlines in Australia in a similar Xzibit fashion (see post HERE).

Teeny boppers will recognise "My Prerogative" and not like it as much as the cover version, while club hoppers will be more familiar with "Thug Lovin'"; the new jack fans, however will be hanging for "Every Little Step" and the New Edition tribute.

Only ONE more week people until voting for the 2007 UMAs are closed. Last year the event copped a lot of flack for having really surprising results and IMO, it was a reflection of the lack of reach the UMAs 2006 had. It's funny how people refuse to vote and boycott the Awards, then complain about the results... why do they contribute their opinions at the wrong time? It happens all the time when public voting is concerned.

So take the time to vote if you're really passionate about the industry, music and scene and show your support for the people who you think deserve the recognition. Go to www.urbanmusicawards.com.au and be heard! Oh and for Hiphop.org.au readers, you can win a double pass to the event! Just check the Competitions forum for more details.

Just a note to all the people (there's only a few) who have been having trouble voting and all that jazz, please make sure you click on the verification link in the confirmation email which could possibly end up in your Junk Mail inbox before you start voting, otherwise you can't vote! And to the people who are claiming that its rigged, I am telling you that it is definitely NOT and stop passing judgment so easily.
