Nas plays Rush on Rock Band

August 8th 2008 08:39
Nas rocked out the East Coast with Illmatic, his seminal hip hop album that brought serious thinkers into the fold. Over time, sure, he lost a lot of appeal, but he's always been that guy. The guy that put out Illmatic.

When Nas goes on The Colbert Report, what do you think Colbert would ask him to do? Talk about hip hop? Perform a song? Introduce a cooking recipe book?

How about, play a little Rock Band.

And try to play a song by Canadian rockers, Rush?

Hell, I didn't expect that.

Should that post be on this site?

Ah, why not? Let's all revel in the intricate weirdness of the human taste for music. If you like Rush, Nas, rock out. Get freaky and rock the hell out.

How far can Nas take it? Do you think that, when he lived in the projects, he thought that, one day, he'd be playing video games on a show featuring a fake Republican on national television?

That last sentence shook me, too.

Can we get more rappers playing video games? And fewer gamers rapping?

Hip hop videos done in The Sims

July 1st 2008 04:17
I'm trying to combine as many posts as possible this week... today, a post on hip hop videos done in the super-popular life simulation, The Sims.

I've only played The Sims a handful of times... sure, it's a little compelling, creating a virtual embodiment of you and your roommates, then locking your roommate in his room when he has to pee, causing him to wet his pants. It's great for that, sure - but at some moment you realize that you're playing the game, essentially, to go shopping for more things to put in your house - and that drove me from it.

Other people, though, love the game, and hip hop fans went another step further. Videogum has a post on the 10 best hip hop videos done in The Sims.

For example, how about a little MIA for breakfast?

Personally, I chuckled at this "Goldigger" video from a Sims-Kanye West:

My tastes are a little old skool, so I didn't feel much about this list. Give me a little Ol' Dirty Bastard or even some NWA going "Gangsta Gangsta".... got some?

I found this video on a dark, dusty evening, trapped in the sleepy halls of the University, and it immediately filled my head with technicolour lights.

Found on Fazed, where it inspired a whole legion of internet denizens to get up and shake their moneymaker.

It's The Sound of Philidelphia, cut to select dance moves from Soul Train, a music variety show that ran from 1971 - 2006. In its heyday, it was a fantastic showcase of the originality of the human spirit, a fine testament to how the human body could express itself.

This just makes me want to dance. And imitate some of the wild moves, like the crazy head-shaking guy, or the man doing the hippity hop.

Even more than that, the women in this video are so alluring, twisted and grooving to a beat. It's sensuality captured from another era, transported into the present to set a whole new generation on fire.

From user rachelrose:

"oh and i just...stumbled on this while looking for a soundclip of that song.
i watched it 5 times in a row and sent it to my mom and medi
best thing i've ever seen. ever. "

Several weeks ago, I posted an article about 70-year-old Bill Cosby's debut into the rap game.

He's getting a bunch of guests to come out and record some positive hip hop songs, encouraging kids to stay in school, respect their parents and get swallowed by a giant whale. Or something of that magnitude.

I took a look on YouTube and found that there are infinite numbers of Cosby rap compliations, like the infamous Dr. Dre/Cosby mashup:

Is that Bill Cosby? No - it's the audio track from the Simpsons episodes making fun of Bill. Take a look at the related videos: no shortage of music videos for this track.

Hell, I think it's catchy, personally. Pokemon? Pokemon!

Even better is finding this old Eddie Murphy clip of his Bill Cosby impression. It's a little over-the-top, but he hits some gold:

And the pinnacle of bizarre Bill Cosby pop culture is this : The House of Cosbys, a short animation that was so weird that Bill used his lawyers to make them stop.

Cibby threw up a nice post yesterday about a short video I sent him that my boyfriend made with 7 bboys, a bgirl and 2 trickers. I want to give this video as much exposure as I can because I really love it and not because i'm biased either - see for yourself. It sends chills down my spine each time I watch it, the music is fitting and adds to a "film noir"-type mood. It highlights the best that Sydney has to offer both in local artistic and physical talent; the classic backdrop is shown in a beautiful, different light to what you'd normally see during the busy city days and the slovenly nightlife.

For a moment it doesn't feel like Sydney, but an older, distant place in Europe. Far from the usual picturesque postcards of Bondi Beach, koalas or the Sydney Opera House, the dim glow of the view from the street level is reminiscent of the lifestyles of the same street dancers and trickers in the video - our underground community. Some struggle for recognition and respect from the broader community, others becoming nonchalant after trying for so long.

Enjoy, and show some love

On another note, directly after the end scene in this video, a man was hit by a Lexus at the intersection before the traffic lights turned green. He flipped into the air and landed smack on the pavement, blood gushing out of his head. A rush of pedestrians who witnessed the accident ran to his assistance and to the car that hit him, carrying a bunch of guys wanting to show off after seeing all the filming going on. They were screaming at the people in the car, "DON'T MOVE!!! STAY THERE! WE'RE CALLING THE POLICE!!!" I think the guy who got hit survived, although we're not sure. I hope he is ok, and if he finds this post, please email or comment to let us know you're ok.

...chacarron...

macarron chacarron el chombo
Famous for mumbling gibberish
So for those of us who are slow with the funny videos floating around in cyberspace, here's one that really makes you shit tears in bricks and more. This Latino track, "Macarron Chacarron" by El Chombo was originally a draft for lyrics to be written in later, but to hell with it they did it with the mumbling gibberish. And it prolly wouldn't be as popular today if it had meaningless lyrics anyway. Sampling Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks", this video will make you cry for whatever reason.

Freeway - Still Got Love video

November 19th 2007 01:22
Freeway is a Roc-A-Fella rapper from Philly that keeps his long Iman beard in spite of the Haterade coming down on American muslims.

Him and Beanie Sigel were tight back in the 80s, and formed a group called State Property. Since then, they've been hard working, though Freeway seems to have avoided that Ruff Ryders feud thing, and kept his mouth shut about Kanye West.

Still, when these boys get together, they make the good stuff:

bliss n eso bullet and a target featuring the connections zulu choir

All I gotta say is... RESPECT!

Bliss n Eso

Return with their latest single:
“Bullet and a Target”
featuring: The Connections Zulu Choir

Bliss n Eso are back with something truly special this time – a collaboration with the Connections Zulu choir, a 21 piece African Choir from the Valley of a thousand hills in South Africa. And the result? Nothing short of extraordinary!

Affected so much by their life changing trip to South Africa earlier in the year with MTV and the Oaktree Foundation, Bliss n Eso where inspired to record a song for charity, donating 100% of the profits to the funding of projects in developing regions of South Africa in the hope of creating awareness and a brighter future for those in need.

The Story:
Hailing from KwaNyuswa, in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, South Africa comes the Connections Zulu Choir – an inspirational group of teenagers and young adults whose songs tell the story of growing up in South Africa. They live in the epicentre of the worlds HIV/AIDS epidemic (over half their population is infected with HIV) and every day they face the challenges posed by high rates of crime, unemployment, substance abuse and extreme poverty. However, in spite of living in such adverse conditions and without any formal training, the choir's musical talent is undeniably incredible.
It had always been a dream of the choir to be able to travel overseas and share their music with the world. Thanks to The Oaktree Foundation, that dream became a reality. In June 2007, the Connections Zulu Choir journeyed to Australia for an amazing three-week music tour. During the tour the choir managed to get together with BNE at Jimmy Barnes' home studio in Sydney and, after a hectic four hour recording session, the foundations for Bullet And A target were laid.

The Cause:

100% of all profits from the sale of this track will go to The Oaktree Foundation, Australia's only youth-run international aid and development organisation. The money will then be channelled through to the Connections Zulu Choir and the funding of other projects in developing regions of South Africa in the hope of creating awareness and a brighter future for those in need.

" When I saw the video of the Connections Zulu Choir singing I realised that this was really something special… As a singer, and as a human, this was something I really wanted to be a part of."
– Jimmy Barnes

" Going over to South Africa really gave us a sense of reality - It's one thing to read about Africa, or to see the ads on TV but actually being there is something totally different. It's incredibly rewarding to know that I've been a part of something that has the potential to not only create awareness but also to really make a difference."
- MC Bliss

brad strut offical the legend australian national tour

it’s official! The Triple J Hip Hop Show, Unkut Recordings and Shogun Distribution are excited to announce Brad Strut’s much anticipated Legend: Official National Tour. Since its release in June this year, the sophomore solo album from the menacing Melbourne lyricist has become one of the most praised Australian hip hop records ever, and fans have clamoured for its sinister sounds to be brought to the stage. Now, Brad Strut returns from destroying shows in Europe and the UK to blow away venues across Australia with the exemplary flow and wordplay of Legend: Official.

Backed up by DJ Big Zed, who executed the searing scratches on Legend: Official, Brad’s murderous metaphors will storm the state capitals, Canberra, Cairns, Townsville, Byron Bay, Geelong and Phillip Island. Album producer and fellow Lyrical Commission icon Trem will appear on all Victorian shows, and the Melbourne date will be capped off by Bob Balans, making for the first on-stage appearance of the Commission in almost two years. Rounding out the bill in each city will be the best local MCs and DJs, along with special interstate guests for several dates.

Brad’s live shows are already legendary, as anyone who witnessed his sold out east coast dates in early 2006 can testify. Now, with performances at Hip Hop Kemp (Czech Republic) and The Edinburgh Festival under his belt, Brad is bringing home his finely tuned stage show of devastating lyrical assaults. The Legend: Official National Tour will be the essential Australian hip hop show of the year – don’t miss out! For ticket information visit Ozhiphop.com forums.

Gee I wish I had been sent a copy of this album to review last year. I've only heard two songs off Thicke's current album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke and I'm madly in love with both of them (thanks to Mr George who put me onto 'Superman' and reminded me of 'Lost Without You'). I love his clean, suave look like Pharrell lent him some clothes. A modern day Casanova with a smoother falsetto than Justin Timberlake, Thicke has re-won my heart and libido over. I didn't mind his scraggly look, running around sweaty on his bike in his first clip, his cheeky lyrics and cute smile did it for me.

These tracks are smooth and sweet, great for when you're feeling lovey-dovey or wanting to get in the mood. Put on as make-out background music and start by slow dancing.

Lost Without You Lyrics:

I’m lost without u
Can’t help myself

To know that I love u baby

To know that I love u baby

Tell me how u love me more
And how u think I’m sexy baby
That u don’t want nobody else
U don’t want this guy u don’t want that guy u wanna
Touch yourself when u see me
Tell me how u love my body
And how I make u feel baby

U wanna roll with me u wanna hold with me
U wanna stay warm and get out of the cold with me
I just love 2 hear u say it
It makes a man feel good baby
Tell me u depend on me

Superman Lyrics:

[Verse 1:]
I'm A Superman Thanks To Lois Lane
Kissed Away My Problems When I Went Insane
Fished Me From The Bottom When I Lost My Name
Gave Me Something I Could Live For (Something I Could Live For)
And Everybody Wonders What's The Change
They Don't Recognize Me Cause I Got So Much To Say
And I Never Thought That Anyone Could Love Someone
So Much That They Give Up On Everything

[Chorus:]
I Will Be There To Take Care Of You
I Will Be There When You Cry Babe
I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Tell You
That You're Beautiful Baby

I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Run With
I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Dance With
I'm Your Lover When The Skies Turn Grey
Everyday Til Its Beautiful Baby

Oh
Til Its Beautiful
Til Its Beau-Ooh Ooh Baby
Til Its Beautiful Baby

[Verse 2:]
I'm A Butterfly When I'm In Your Hands
You Can Turn The Pavement Into White Sand
You Can Make A Moment A Memory In A Glance
And I Cant Believe Anyone Else
And Everybody's Talking
But You Always Keep Shouting
You Never Stop Cursing Yea Babe
And I Never Thought That Anyone Could Love Someone
So Much That They Give Up On Everything

[Chorus:]
I Will Be There To Take Care Of You
I Will Be There When You Cry Babe
I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Tell You
That You're Beautiful Baby

I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Run With
I Will Be There When You Need Someone To Dance With
I'm Your Lover When The Skies Turn Grey
Everyday Til Its Beautiful Baby

I'm Your Superman Baby
Yea
Your Superman Baby
Oooh

Til It's Beautiful
Til It's Beautiful
Til Its Beautiful Baby
Your Superman Babe
Til It's Beautiful
Til Its Beau-Ooh Ooh Baby
Til Its Beautiful Baby

[Verse 3:]
There's A Million People Underneath The Sun
That Can Find A Million More And Never Find The One
There's A Girl Who Did This And A Socialite
Was On Magazines And Was The Shy Type Baby
But I'm A Superman Thanks To Lois Lane
Fished Me From The Bottom When I Lost My Name
And I Never Thought Anyone Could Ever Mean So Much So Much

Til It's Beautiful
Til It's Beautiful
Til Its Beautiful Baby
Your Superman Babe
Til It's Beautiful
Til It's Beautiful
Til Its Beautiful Baby

jean grae chicken noodle soup

The South African MC jean-ius makes fun of modern popular rappers by going 50 IQ points lower in this freestyle spoof over a Chicken Noodle Soup beat. Remember that crazy song and dance that got everyone including Chris Brown hooked? It was later replaced by the Aunt Jackie craze.

Catch her on Talib Kweli's new album Eardrum, dropping this July/August.

Nas can't forget about you video
Nas
I've been digging this track for a while. From the rich lyrics dripping with hints of Hip Hop history to the catchy soulful chorus sung by Chrisette Michele that samples Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" classic in this Will.I.Am produced track, Nas' "Can't Forget About You" is reminiscent of the good old days and has been promoted to one of my main ringtones.

Peep the vid:

Lyrics:

[Nas- Verse One]

There comes a day in your life
When you want to kick back
Straw hat on the porch
When you old perhaps
Want to gather your thoughts
Have a cold one, Brag
To your grand kids on how life is golden
So I’ma light a cigar in the corridor of the crib
Pictures on the wall of all the things that I did
All the money and fame, 8 by 10’s
Of the whole rap pack inside of a big frame
Colliding with big names that could’ve made you career stop
All that, and your man is still here, and I’m still hot
Wow, I need a moment ya’ll, See I almost felt a tear drop

When was the last time you heard real anthem?
Nas, the millionaire, the mansion
When was the last time yo
