Oprah Finally Hosts Hip Hop Forum
April 19th 2007 05:17
Oh how absolutely refreshing to see an open forum on Hip Hop finally making it to a mainstream TV show. Oprah hosts the overdue Hip Hop Townhall Meeting, headed by Russell Simmons, in response to tv and radio show host Don Imus' racial and gender slurs early this April. Imus had commented on the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship calling the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos" and "Jiggaboos".
Imus later apologized but was fired a week later by NBC for his remarks, with Rosie O'Donnell protesting in support of Imus on free speech grounds. I'm not surprised.
It's about time that Hip Hop was addressed on a wide scale and non-superficial level, discussed with as much intellect as there is publicity. It's time to reaffirm the positives of the Hip Hop culture, the responsibility of parents, artists and record labels; to recognise the real problems and treat these issues with as much effort as there is being put in others like climate change and incurable diseases.
Here's the complete Oprah segment in 4 parts.
