Jay Z shows Sydney how to Roc Tha Block (and Ne-Yo's after party)
October 26th 2006 21:31
I got to the Entertainment Centre (Sydney) last Wednesday night real late, like 9.30ish, but I was just in time for Jay Z's set. He went off, Memphis Bleek rockin' alongside him. Amazing as always, it's a shame that he wasn't appreciated as much as his protegés Ne-Yo and Rihanna, who performed earlier; everyone I had asked about the two previous performances said "Ne-Yo was real good, but Rihanna wasn't much of a performer - she's just hot."
There were many who left during Jay Z's performance, and of those who stayed, only about a fifth (probably even less) knew all his music, his lyrics, and of those whom he gave tributes to (Biggie, Pac, Jam Master Jay, Aaliyah - I had tears in my eyes for Babygirl).
Still, Jay Z worked the crowd and would tease them with snippets of Beyoncé's instrumentals, in the hope that she'll come out and do a surprise guest performance with her beau - this was probably the reason a lot of people stayed for Jay Z yet it never happened.
There was some debate over which after party was the real hot spot: Jay Z & Beyoncé were scheduled to be at an industry party in Kings Cross, while the official after party hosted by Ne-Yo (he didn't get on the mic at all) was at Home nightclub.
I chose Home.
Jay Z and B were at the Cross for about 20 minutes, don't really know what happened there, but Ne-Yo stayed a while at Home, and entertained several female fans (no, not in any sexual way).
And no, for those wondering if I got snapped happy with the star in the VIP room, I didn't get to meet him even though he was only a metre away.
Well done to all the organisers and promoters for a hugely successful concert and I'm sure the rest of the tour will be just as incredible. Special thanks to Mr S.H. and the NonStopTouring team for treating me so kindly - enjoy Brisbane and Melbourne!
